Mumps virus belongs to the family Paramyxovirus and genus Paramyxovirus. The virus is spherical in shape, with a diameter of 100-200 nm. Its genome consists of single stranded negative stranded RNA, and its capsid is helical symmetric. There are protrusions such as HA and NA on the envelope, which are composed of glycoproteins. So far, only one serotype of mumps virus has been found. The virus can proliferate in the amniotic cavity of chicken embryos or in monkey kidney cell culture, and can cause cell fusion to form multinucleated giant cells. The mumps virus is sensitive to heat, lipid solvents, and ultraviolet radiation, but is resistant to low temperatures. It can survive for 3 months at 2 ℃ and for over a year at -60 ℃.

Mumps is a common childhood disease characterized by swelling and pain in the parotid gland, with a global distribution. It is more common in winter and spring, and susceptible to pathogens and immunology in school-age children. The mumps virus only infects humans, and the source of infection is the patient and the carrier of the virus. It is mainly transmitted through Feizhu and can also be transmitted through direct human to human contact. The incubation period is long, usually 2-3 weeks. After invading the human body, the virus first proliferates in the respiratory tract and then enters the bloodstream, causing viremia. It spreads to the salivary glands and other organs such as the pancreas, testes, ovaries, kidneys, and central nervous system along with the bloodstream. Mumps is highly contagious. Patients before and within one week after onset are highly contagious. The patient presents with weakness and decreased appetite. Enlargement of one or both parotid glands, accompanied by pain and fever. The course of the disease lasts for 1-2 weeks, and the infection occurs during adolescence. Men are prone to developing orchitis, which can lead to testicular atrophy and miscarriage; Women are prone to developing ovarian inflammation, and infections in pregnant women within 3 months of pregnancy can lead to fetal abnormalities.

(2) Immunological properties

Patients can acquire a strong immune system after illness, and passive immunity can be obtained from the mother. Therefore, mumps in infants under 6 months old is rare.
