Adenovirus is a non enveloped particle with a diameter of 70-90 nm, composed of 252 shell particles arranged in a 20 sided structure. The diameter of each capsid is 7-9 nm. Inside the capsid is a linear double stranded DNA molecule, containing approximately 30-47 kb [6], with approximately 100 bp long reverse repeat sequences at each end. Due to the covalent binding of the 5 'end of each DNA strand to a protein molecule with a relative molecular weight of 55X103Da, a circular structure of double stranded DNA can be formed.
Adenovirus is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets, followed by close contact and fecal oral transmission, with strong infectivity and widespread susceptibility among the population. Infected children may experience repeated and frequent high fever, often above 39 ℃. After the fever subsides, it quickly rises again and lasts for about a week. Sometimes, even taking antipyretic medication makes it difficult to lower the temperature to normal. At the same time, there are symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, red eyes, and mental fatigue. Adenovirus infection can generally heal on its own, and there is currently no specific medication available, only symptomatic treatment is needed. Except for fever induced discomfort that requires the use of antipyretics such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, there is little need for other medications, especially various antibiotics. [8]
In May 2024, scientists from the Federal University of S ã o Paulo in Brazil discovered genomic remnants of adenovirus in Neanderthal remains dating back over 50000 years, making it one of the oldest known human viruses discovered as of May 2024. [7]
